Environment News on Kerala: Reports Kerala environment ecology climate change biodiversity western ghats pollution soil land policy coastal management etc
Vembanad Fish count 2009 was successfully completed as scheduled. we could find out 62 species of fishes and 14 species of crustaceans. In the first vembanad fish count conducted during May 2008 ,we found 50 species of fishes and 12 species of crustacians only( This report is released in the valedictory function held on 27th May 2009). The increase in the count is attributed to the early opening of the Thanneermukkom barrage and intrusion of saline water as well as sea fishes. The water quality analysis in selected spots also showed positive results and this too is due to the flow of water and flushing ,as the bund is opened in the right time. This survey brought together the researchers, scientists, NGOs, students, fishermen, media persons , politicians and administrators together , to number 170 total, who discussed the issues of the lake and its biodiversity , seeking local solutions through massive efforts , was a novel experience. Mooting such associations and plan of actions will definitely help to save our environment in an effective manner, is perhaps the moral of the story . Govt departments need to consider these approaches while planning strategies for positive actions to protect the environment .
