KOLLAM: “Kerala may be the only place on earth which has this much number of mobile towers,’’ says Kate Wenner, Associate Editor of ‘American Guild’, a US magazine. ``The authorities should not hesitate to impose reasonable restrictions on the construction of mobile towers and should ensure that they are erected in a scientific manner,’’ she said . Kate, who is also a novelist, playwright , and an environmental activist arrived here to visit environmental researcher Dr.Sainudeen Pattazhi who had recently published a study report on adverse impact of mobile towers on the habitat system of honeybees. She is preparing to produce a documentary film on the impact of mobile towers on the habitat system of animals along with another environmental researcher Gil Eisner.
Kate said that in no other part of the world has so much density of mobile towers as in Kerala. They are also erected in an unscientific manner. Towers should not be allowed near educational institutions, hospitals and residential areas. It is not right to oppose the towers as such or the use of the modern technology. However, reasonable restrictions are needed. She said that frequency level check up system should be introduced. The living creatures are affected by radiation from the towers.
According to her, the problem is likely to get worse with the switchover to 3G mobile system, as they require more energy for their functioning. Then the electro-magnetic radiation from the towers will also be high. She said in US most of the customers are using 2G mobile sets. Only in India and other Asian countries is the GSM mobile technology being widely used while the US and other Western countries have shifted to CDMA technology which has a comparatively a low frequency rate of radiation. Kate visited the apiculture centre at Vettikkavala near Kottarakkara on Sunday.
