Tribals celebrate paddy transplant

KALPETTA: The Kurichya tribal people of Kodumayil Tharavadu at Cheruvayal, near Mananthavadi, celebrated ‘vilanatty' (paddy transplant) festival on Sunday.

The programme was organised jointly by Thanal, an NGO, the Edavaka grama panchayat and Thilakkam, a tribal self-help group, as a part of ‘Save our rice' campaign aimed at conserving the traditional seeds in the district.

As many as 23 varieties of traditional rice seeds, usually cultivated by the tribal people in the district, including Marathondi, Chennellu, Gandhakassala and Chettu Veliyan, were transplanted in four acres of land after a ‘gothra puja.'

K. Achappan, a tribal chieftain, was the priest of the ceremony.

K.C. Kuchiraman, MLA, inaugurated the ‘vilanatty.' He also released a people's biodiversity register of the Edavaka grama panchayat by presenting it to M. Mohan, State coordinator, Bio Diversity Board, at the function.

Kuttiyottil Achappan, block panchayat president, Mananthavadi, presided over the function.
Twelve panchayats in the district had been selected to implement the campaign in the current fiscal, K.R Pradeesh, district coordinator of the programme, said.
