Bamboo grove reserve to be set up

KALPETTA: A portion of the Anoth river bank area will be declared as a bamboo grove ‘trial' reserve in a bid to conserve biodiversity.

This was decided at a joint meeting of the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) and the Vythiri and the Pozhuthana grama panchayat authorities here on Saturday.

The adventure tourism potential of the region will also be explored under the ‘responsible tourism' initiative, DTPC secretary Rajeswar Dayal told The Hindu after the meeting.

Over 60 different species of bamboo would be planted. Adventure sports including rafting and river crossing would be launched on an 8-km stretch (of the Anoth) from Vythiri to Pozhuthana, he said.

The DTPC, Wayanad Tourism Organisation, Oisca International and the Forest Department would jointly implement the project.

The planting activities would be taken up by the grama panchayats under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme using saplings provided by ‘Uravu, an indigenous science and technology study centre at Thrikkaippatta, and the Social Forestry division of the Forest Department here.

Survey planned

The land survey to ascertain the extend of ‘poramboke' would begin soon. Facilities for tourists would come up at Vythiri and Anoth Kadavu in one week. Steps are being taken for that, Mr.Dayal said.
