Blue-footed booby dead

KOLLAM: In spite of efforts by veterinary surgeons, the wild blue-footed booby that got separated from its flock and fell down at Karunagapally while in flight last Thursday died at the District Veterinary Centre here on Sunday night. The bird, native to the Galapagos Islands, was being provided medical care since last Friday by the district unit of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

Veterinary surgeon and technical expert to the SPCA B. Aravind, who led the medical team, said that right from the time it was found, the bird was in a critical condition. It seemed highly emaciated and was gasping for breath. The bird was administered antibiotics and glucose intravenously. But it hardly showed signs of recovery and refused food.

Dr. Aravind said that the bird was diagnosed with respiratory infection in the preliminary check-up itself. He said that the post-mortem examination of the carcass had confirmed the infection.

Last month, another blue-footed booby had fallen at the Asramam Maidan in Kollam city in similar circumstances. But that bird quickly responded to SPCA's treatment and was nursed back to health. It is now rehabilitated at the Thiruvananthauram zoo. Releasing it can endanger the bird's life since it got isolated from its flock.
