Kozhikode: As the agitation at Njeliyanparamba against the Corporation's waste disposal plant there entered the fifth day on Thursday, leaders of the agitation said they would be forced to resort to more drastic forms of protest if the authorities concerned continued to be insensitive to their demand.
Speaking to The Hindu chairman of the Njeliyanparamba Samara Munnani V.P. Basheer said, “we will not let the Mayor sleep in peace when we are not able to sleep because of the unbearable stink from Njeliyanparamba dumping yard.''
About 35 protesters, including women and children, were arrested by the police as they blocked the garbage-laden lorries on Thursday. Nearly 100 protesters had been courting arrest every day since the indefinite agitation was launched on August 1.All the arrested had been released on bail.
The police at Nallalam station said cases had been taken against the protesters on the basis of complaints from drivers of Corporation lorries which were being blocked by the agitators.The protesters had been booked for obstructing public servants (Corporation's truck drivers) from discharging their duties (of taking waste into the dumping yard) and for blocking road traffic.
The agitation leaders said there was no valid ground for the police to make arrests since the protesters had not been creating law and order problems.Corporation authorities had made it clear that they were implementing a programme to reduce pollution from the Neliyanparamba waste plant since they had no other place to dump and treat the huge quantity of waste that the city was generating every day. The quantity of waste dumped at Njeliyanmaparama was being reduced. Waste disposal process was being decentralised.The agitators said the neighbourhood of Njeliyanparamba waste plant had become inhospitable because of pollution it had been causing all these years.
