Biogas plant gets patent

Thiruvananthapuram: The city-based Biotech Centre for Development of Biogas Technology and other Nonconventional Energy Sources has secured an Indian patent for a portable domestic biowaste treatment biogas plant developed by it.

Unlike conventional biogas plants that require cattle dung as feedstock, the plant developed by Biotech can run on household and kitchen waste. Made of fibreglass, the unit weighing 60 kg can be installed in four hours. “It was designed for apartments and houses in small plots”, says Saji Das, proprietor of the firm. Biotech claims that the unit is also capable of treating waste water without polluting the environment. The company is offering licence and financial assistance for commercial production of the patented product.
