Cardiovascular benefits of nuts highlighted

KOLLAM: A symposium on ‘nuts and cardiovascular health' organised by the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC) at Barcelona recently has concluded that nut consumption benefits cardiovascular health. Conclusions of the symposium were released to the media here on Tuesday by INC ambassador to India Pratap Nair.

The symposium was a gathering of scientists in the nut research sector from Europe, United States and Australia. It covered cardiovascular health aspects relating to cashew, almond, Brazil nut, Hazel nut, macadamia, pecan, pine nut, pistachio, walnut and peanut.
The conclusions were based on scientific studies that examined the health benefits of nut consumption in the last five years.

One of the main conclusions is that epidemiological and clinical studies have shown that frequent intake of nuts is not associated with weight gain or worsening diabetes control.
Yet another conclusion is that nuts are whole foods with more impressive body of scientific evidence supporting beneficial effects on cardiovascular and other health outcomes.
Incorporating various kinds of nuts in a healthy diet has shown a consistent cholesterol lowering effect.

Scientists who participated in the symposium include Miguel A. Martinez-Gonzalez from the University of Navarra (Spain), Joan Sabate from Lomma Linda University (USA) and Linda C. Tapsell from the University of Wollongong (Australia).

The moderators were Emilos Ros from the Lipids unit of Barcelona Hospital Clinic and Jordi Salas-Salvado from the University of Rovira i Virgili, Spain.
