Thiruvananthapuram: As many as 45 films on environment and wildlife are being screened as part of the CMS Vatavaran travelling film festival and forum which took off here on Monday.
Filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan and Forest Minister Benoy Viswom inaugurated the festival by lighting the lamp at the Kala Bhavan theatre.
Also present on the occasion were N. Bhaskara Rao, chairman CMS; T.M. Manoharan, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests; R.V. Varma, Chairman, Biodiversity Board of Kerala, and Suresh Elamon, filmmaker.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Gopalakrishnan said: “We need to focus on the younger generation and films are a powerful medium to attract the attention of youth towards environmental issues.”
Mr. Manoharan emphasised the need for concerted efforts by the Forest Department as well as civil society groups and the public to conserve the environment.
A series of workshops, panel discussion, exhibition, eco-tour and marathon, in addition to film screenings will be organised as part of the film festival and forum. Entry is free. “Angels in Tigerland” directed by Suresh Elamon was screened as the inaugural film.
Green heroes
Three individuals from Kerala who had made significant contributions to environmental conservation, namely Bal Pandi, Vava Suresh and C.V. Vidyadharan were felicitated during the inaugural ceremony.
Special programmes
Special programmes are also being organised in schools, colleges and clubs as part of the festival.
The theme of CMS VATAVARAN 2010 – Environment and Wildlife Travelling Film Festival & Environment Forum is Climate Change and Sustainable Technologies.
The festival and forum aims to promote sustainable technologies, with a focus on green production and delivery methods, convergence and fusion of new consumer services, and on the notion of ‘collective goods' for greater environmental efficiency, which can usher in a new green order.
