THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Ecorun India, an NGO engaged in raising ecological awareness by organising events such as long-distance runs, is organising a marathon from Kottayam to Thiruvananthapuram, via Kollam, to create awareness on how burning of dry leaves and garbage contributes to global warming.
About 170 youngsters from schools and colleges along the route in Kottayam, Kottarakara, Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram will run the marathon as a relay, with each participant running two km, organisers of the event said at a press conference here on Tuesday.
The highlight of the event will be a solo marathon attempt by George R. Thomas, a 63-year-old who is settled in Canada for the past 40 years. A mathematician, he is the executive director of Mathpath, an NGO based in the U.S.
Dr. Thomas is an experienced marathon runner and ran 1,030 km from Kanyakumari to Sree Mookambika Temple in Karnataka in 2008 in 40 days. This run is however, different as he is planning to run the 172 km distance continuously for 29 hours. He will start the run on February 9 at 2 p.m. to finish at the Central stadium here on February 10 at 7 p.m.
