‘Susthira Samrudhi’ programme launched

Express News Service

THRISSUR: The Kerala Agricultural University has launched a programme called “Susthira Samrudhi” to provide technical and training support to the development initiatives of local self-government institutions. The scientists of KAU along with the development departments will help the local bodies to formulate innovative integrated projects to enhance productivity and farm income.

The university has formulated about 50 project ideas in agriculture, animal husbandry, fisheries, farm mechanisation and watershed development which can be tried out by local bodies, said KAU sources.

The project would streamline the interventions of the university that take place sporadically in several local bodies across the state. It would be piloted in selected local bodies in Thrissur District. The programme would be scaled up in later years. The university has decided to launch the programme this month to be in line with project formulation process in LSGIs.

A joint meeting of the members of the Executive Committee and top officials held at the Agricultural Technology Information Centre (ATIC), Mannuthy, the other day decided to devise exclusive mechanisms to provide the local bodies with technical guidance, training and handholding support for implementing projects. This would strengthen the relationship between the university and the farming community and enhance the impact of its research and extension activities on the livelihoods of rural masses. Apart from this, it may also help the university to prioritise its research based on local needs.
