World wetlands day observed

PALAKKAD: The district administration is planning to plant bamboo, vetiver (ramacham) and lagar stroemea (neermarathu) as part of the efforts to protect the river banks, District Collector K V Mohan Kumar said.

He was speaking after inaugurating the seminar to mark the observance of the World Wetlands Day at the Government Victoria College auditorium here on Tuesday. President of the Akkathethara grama panchayat D Sadasivan presided over the meet. The world wetland day was observed by the Wildlife Department and social forestry wing by conducting various programmes and an awareness rally. The themes of the seminars and programmes were the conservation of wetlands, bio diversity and climatic change. The aim was to create public awareness on the need to conserve nature.

Among those who presented papers included the coordinator of the World Wildlife fund for Nature Jain Therattil and lecturer of the NSS college Nemmara Kishore Kumar.
